Featured Artist of the Week 7.4.2010 Presents: Showkase Da Great

Hello again everyone! Sounds of the Underground is back with this week's Featured Artist of the Week. This week's artist hails from Las Vegas by way of Compton. I proudly present to you, SHOWKASE DA GREAT! Today you will find out more about Showkase, the artist & the man as well as ALL contact info and you will hear his music. Sit back, relax & enjoy.

***Who is He???

In the over saturated world of rap, artists are always looking for ways to reinvent themselves as fans are on a constant search for something new and refreshing. Creativity comes easier for some than others. Music is full of duplicates. It is no surprise that with a name that literally means, "an exhibit or display, usually of an ideal or representative model of something," Showkase offers something authentic to peers, fans, and critics.

Twenty-three year old Showkase was born in Compton, California. Raised in a strong household, Kase witnessed hard work first hand. His mother is both his biggest fan, and greatest source of influence. As a child she always told Showkase to "chase his dreams." He did just that relocating to Las Vegas in 2003. When asked, "Why Vegas?" Kase explains that being surrounded with hustle is like a constant encouragement.

Showkase began taking music seriously at age thirteen. Ten years later and he finds himself competing at a level than most only dream about reaching. Although he is not a Vegas native, Kase has planted his roots and has big plans to build an entire from the city, as well as to be known as the artist that put Vegas hip hop on the mainstream map. He has already released two mixtapes (Ikon of a New Era and Turn Me Up), which received an amazing amount of local support.

Showkase expresses that music is his passion and he loves it. It’s not work, it’s a lifestyle. That’s why he is able to stay in the studio for hours on end. Producing projects that people can appreciate. Kase had already completed the sequel to a mixtape series prior to the first one’s release. A combination of work ethic and raw talent equate a recipe for success.
Kase is affiliated with some definite heavy hitters of the game, yet he relies soIely on his own talent to convince the nay-sayers that he is more than a gimmic. Currently he has a library containing nearly one hundred unreleased songs. The best of those will be included on the EP Realrap and Bluez, set to release September 2010.

"People are going to love the music because it’s a direct reflection of me, and I’m someone that they can relate to. The whole TopDawgEnt, we make "human music," it’s for everybody.

"It took a little while for people to get used to listening to me but the new music speaks for itself," he says. "If anybody doubted before, Realrap and Bluez is going to make them a believer.

***Who is He???

Slangston Hughes, THE Connoisseur of Fine Rhyme, can be summed up in the following quote from fellow emcee, Mr. J'ai: "The future of hip-hop has arrived. Slangston Hughes' music is a fresh blend of sensible lyrics, head bobbing beats, and unpredictably witty wordplay. Slangston is pushing the envelope and destroying all stereotypes of what a Southern emcee is supposed to sound like. He represents the new movement of unheard, progressive New Orleans rap." Hughes’ first mixtape, Money & The Message, featured original production from Blaze the Verbal Chemist, Jon Jackson of American New Wave Media Group, and New Orleans Power 102.9 FM’s own DJ Mike Swift. Money & The Message emphasizes lyrical tenacity and subject matter with meaning. Hughes was the first ever two and three-time winner of the Microphone Co-Rivalry Emcee Competition, a tournament-style, crowd judged emcee contest. Hughes, both as a solo artist and as a member of the New Orleans supergroups Tygah Woods and Superugly, has opened for Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother, Mickey Factz, Lyrics Born, Wise Intelligent, and the Asian Hip-Hop Summit tour. Slangston is currently founder and co-host of Uniquity, a monthly showcase that highlights the variety of talent in New Orleans and honors the city’s musical roots, backed by the live fusion jazz band, Fo On the Flo. Slangston is also a contributing author to New Orleans: The Underground Guide (2010). Available late summer 2010, Slangston Hughes’ mixtape, Nu Growth, will be available for digital download and at local retailers. Featured Artist of the Week 5.30.2010 : SKIPP COON & Mr. Nick

Ladies and Gentleman, we are back again with another HOTT Independent artist as this week's feature. This week's artist is the epitome of revolutionary, bold and independent. When you hear the phrase, "the revolution will not be televised" its very correct, because the revolution is being told through bars of rhythmic rhymes. I proudly present to you, Jackson, MS native, SKIPP COON & MR. NICK! Today you will learn more about this revolutionary hip hop duo, hear their music and have all of their contact information at your fingertips. Sit back, relax and enjoy SKIPP COON & MR. NICK...

***Who Are They???

“The revolution will not be televised, but thanks to Skipp Coon and Mr. Nick, it can be heard.” – Jackson Free Press, 2008

Where it all began:  A DJ & an Emcee.

Skipp Coon’s (Joecephus Martin) words embody those of one that is definitely a by-product of his environment.  His lines are witty & dark, sincere yet powerful and his message is thought-provoking and socially conscious, all of which complement his political, societal, and economic views.  Skipp simply “makes music that allows his listeners to reflect and not feel alone in the struggle”.

Mr. Nick (Nicholas Mejia), an extremely diverse musician and multi-instrumentalist, got his start playing guitar in various bands in Miami. First an avid record collector, then a DJ, eventually he got involved with production and electronic instruments when he realized the power of the drum, and as a result, he now makes music not because he wants to, but because he has to.

So… What makes these two so unique?  You ask good questions.
Skipp Coon, a rapper from Jackson, Mississippi, had no idea what he and Mr. Nick, a DJ from Miami could have possibly had in common.  The verdict: good music.  In the spring of 2008, Nick approached Skipp, after one of his sets at the well-known basement lounge, Seven*Studioz, complimenting Skipp on his sound.  After many long conversations and meetings, the two agreed to work on Skipp’s next project... together.  Having never done any production or engineering, Nick took on the challenge of producing and recording Skipp’s entire album.

The rapper & the DJ officially became a duo and created Women Revolution Tennis Shoes, initially released October 2008 on Skipp’s independently-owned label, TiBBiT Music.  The album contains 10 tracks of Skipp’s fresh, raw lyricism and Nick’s eclectic mix of traditional and experimental sounds.  Reissued February 2010, Women Revolution Tennis Shoes continues to gain Skipp Coon & Mr. Nick acclaim from a growing audience.

In concert, Skipp & Nick keep their audience engaged, as they provide a nostalgic look at where it all began:  A DJ & an emcee. Skipp provides a mean, cadential flow, occasionally flashing the crowd a smile while Nick provides the sounds with with an ever-growing arsenal of buttons and blinking lights, each time giving the fans far more than they expected.

An album full of surprises and with a sound of its own, Women Revolution Tennis Shoes rattles out intense percussive beats paired with soulful and bluesy riffs, and live instrumentation to serve as the perfect backdrop to the sharp, crafty, and unmistakable flow that together make a flawless 40 minute experience.

Born and raised in New Orleans Austin Levy, who has been recording and performing under the moniker A. Levy since 1999, has shared the same stages as Mickey Factz, Curren$y, Mannie Fresh, N.E.R.D. and many more.

With a classic New Orleans Hip Hop sound that will make your head bob and meaningful messages to match the flavor of the instrumentals that accompany his rhymes, A. Levy is well on his way to making a name for himself in the underground Hip Hop scene.
